Leadership Studies Sequence

The Leadership Studies Sequence is a multi-disciplinary program focusing on the nature of leadership and followership. It is coordinated with the co-curricular activities of its sponsoring organization, the Kravis Leadership Institute at Claremont McKenna College (CMC). The sequence is designed for CMC students interested in pursuing a career involving the scholarly study and/or practice of leadership, who feel that an understanding of leadership would be helpful to them in another career, or who have a causal interest in the subject. Completion of the Sequence will be noted on student transcripts. A total of five courses are required to complete the Sequence. |
The specific goals of the Leadership Students Sequence are:
1. To understand leadership theories, concepts, and issues from a variety of
disciplinary perspectives;
2. To have knowledge of the methods by which leadership is studied;
3. To understand cross-cultural and international issues in leadership;
4. To appreciate the importance of ethics in leadership;
5. To develop critical thinking and analytical and decision making skills;
6. To develop written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
7. To obtain some awareness of one’s own leadership potential and competencies;
8. To gain practical experience in applying leadership knowledge and principles. |

BENEFITS OF ADDING THE SEQUENCE |
In addition to the academic approach to leadership KLI also provides students opportunities to improve practical leadership skills by organizing workshops, speaker series, leadership retreats and sponsoring student conference attendance. Some of these activities are open to all, but others are designed specifically for Leadership Sequence students.
One specific benefit is access to KLI’s Leadership Coaching Program, open to only studentsengaged in KLI and its programs. This one semester commitment includes 3 group sessions and 6-8 individual sessions with a leadership coach to increase your self-awareness and gain practical tools for effective leadership.
